Today's Catholic accentuates the negative

Today's Catholic, the newspaper of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, carried the CNS article about Dario Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos' negative comments regarding "some" traditional Catholics as being "insatiable, incredible".

I've already reported on this CNS article over a week ago here. Others across the internet have commented on this same subject as well.

What is interesting is that Today's Catholic did not pick up the other article from CNS (the media arm of the USCCB) that cast traditional Catholics in a much more positive light and highlighted the poor implementation of Summorum Pontificum to date in most places. This article can be read here, and I've commented on this development as well, here, and so have others on the internet.

In all fairness, we should expect the next issue of Today's Catholic to run this story just as they did the negative one, and we the faithful who are attached to usus antiquior should take a moment and write a quick email to the editor of Today's Catholic asking him to do just that.

Please drop a line to Mr. Tim Johnson, the editor, at editor@fw.diocesefwsb.org asking him to carry the other CNS article in the next edition of Today's Catholic.

While we are at it, we should also ask Mr. Johnson to carry a story about Cardinal Hoyos' introduction to The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described in which the Cardinal makes clear that "Catholics have a juridical right to the more ancient liturgical rites, and that parish priests and bishops must accept the petitions and the requests of the faithful who ask for it". You can read about that here, as well as many other places on the internet.

If we don't write, then we will not be heard.

Here is a copy of what I wrote to Mr. Tim Johnson:

Dear Mr. Johnson,

Thank you for your efforts at Today's Catholic. The work you are doing is very important in keeping the faithful of the diocese well informed about their faith and important news affecting their faith lives.

I noticed that Today's Catholic carried the CNS news article in the News Briefs section about Cardinal Hoyos' negative comments regarding "some" traditionalists Catholics as being "insatiable, incredible."

I'm not sure if you know this, but CNS also carried another article that appeared only three days latter (Sept 19th), which highlighted the poor implementation of Summorum Pontificum in most places to date, and cast traditional Catholics in a more positive light. This news article can be found here: http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/0804776.htm

Knowing that you strive for objectivity and fairness, I'm sure this second CNS article will appear in the News Briefs section of the next edition of Today's Catholic. I'm sure you would like to also highlight the fact that Bishop John D'Arcy has done an admirable job in making the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite readily available in the diocese by posting the Mass times of the Extraordinary Form in Fort Wayne and in South Bend.

Also, it might interest you to know that Cardinal Hoyos' wrote an introduction to the newly reprinted edition of The Ceremonies of the Roman Described in which he wrote, "Catholics have a juridical right to the more ancient liturgical rites, and that parish priests and bishops must accept the petitions and the requests of the faithful who ask for it". The press release and his full comments can be found here: http://www.newliturgicalmovement.org/2008/09/press-release-vatican-cardinal-commends.html

Thank you very much for taking the time to read and consider these points, and thanks once again for such a fine Catholic publication as Today's Catholic.

Sincerely,

Mr. David Werling
